2021 Sweep Rowing Programs

Coached Masters Sweep (Fall 2021) - Racers and non-Racers welcome!

September 7– October 30, 2021 (8 weeks)

3-day option - 3 practices/week: M-W-F 5:30-7:00 AM

  • Program fee: $500 

2-day option - 2 practices/week: T-R 6:15-7:45 AM

  • Lead Coach: Ala Crockett
  • Program fee: $335 
  • Replaces Coached Big Boat Rowing program

Coxswains - wanted for both programs

  • No program fee for coxswains
  • Coxing experience helpful, but not required (will train)
  • $30 compensation per session

Regular attendance is encouraged. For those who want to enter fall races, there may be additional practices. Race line-ups and schedule are at the discretion of the Head Coach. Racing costs in addtion to program fee.

All participants including coxswains must be fully vaccinated (two weeks out from final shot whether 1- or 2-shot protocol) by September 7th in order to participate in this program per UVRF rules. Proof of vaccination will be required prior to the first practice. You may upload a scan of your vaccination card confidentially by email to or email the same address to request alternative options for verification. (Please note, we can not verify vaccination status at practice.)

UVRF reserves the right to cancel the program if enrollment numbers are low. All registration fees will be refunded if this occurs.

PRIOR PROGRAMMING

Evening Sweeps

New this year, we will offer a program to allow members to row in 8+s and 4+s Tuesday and Thursday evenings which will combine coaching with a fun workout. These coached sessions are for rowers who choose to enjoy the camaraderie of team boats (8+s and 4+s) while improving their fitness and technique.  Prior sweep experience is required along with the flexibility to row with different team mates. Membership in UVRF is required along with an up-to-date swim test and covid vaccination. All ages (under 18 with permission of coach).

Cost: $240 (five weeks) July 20 - August 19, T-R, 5:30-7:00pm

Novice Intensive Sweep

Coaches: Martha Beattie and Guest Coaches

The Novice Intensive Sweep program is open to adult rowers with no rowing experience. Rowers will learn the basic rowing stroke on land and will advance to an 8-oared boat, where each rower has one oar. The boat is steered by a coxswain and will be accompanied by a motor launch. During the course, rowers will learn the basic rowing technique, boat handling skills, and water safety. Regular attendance is required.

The classes will meet on six consecutive weekdays, Friday through Friday of the next week, starting Friday, June 25 and continuing through Friday, July 2. The program will be held from 5:30 to 7:00 PM at the Kendal Waterfront Park in Hanover. Once participants complete the Novice Intensive course, they can sign up for the summer Coached Big Boat Rowing program.

The UVRF membership fee is waived for the Novice Intensive Sweep program.

NOVICE INTENSIVE ROWING

  • Friday, June 25 – Friday, July 2 (6 sessions)
  • 5:30 – 7:00 PM for six consecutive weekdays

Big Boats (Sweep & Scull) Coach: Ala Crockett

The Upper Valley Rowing Foundation masters rowing program is open to all adult rowers who have completed at least one novice rowing program at UVRF or elsewhere, or who have prior rowing experience at the club or collegiate level. Anyone wishing to learn to be a coxswain is very welcome and will be a valuable addition to the group.  This program is also open to high school students with at least one year of high school rowing experience.  Anyone who wants to improve their skills and those who express an interest in competition are all welcome.  

This year's masters rowing program is divided into two sessions which will each be offered in the summer and in the fall. All programs will take place at the Kendal waterfront site. Program fees for each session are noted below. Should rowers choose to compete, they will be responsible for racing entry fees, to be determined in advance of each regatta.

UVRF will be hosting a club-wide sprint race in late July (tentatively the weekend of July 25-26, tbd) as well as a fall head-race series (tbd). Please check back for further details as they become available

Coached Masters Rowing: M-W-F from 5:30 to 7:00 AM

This is an opportunity for those who choose to train to compete or choose to train for fitness. This program focuses on maximizing technique and fitness in preparation for summer (1k/2k meter) and fall (5k) racing seasons. Practice lineups and race entries will include options for men's, women's and mixed boats (8+s, 4+s, 4xs, and 2xs) in order to maximize training and create opportunities for all who wish to race. Additionally, with the intent to make the program experience positive and competitive, coaches will determine lineups and race entries and may use seat racing and/or erg testing for boat selection. Maximum number of participants - 20

Coached Big Boats:T-R from 6:30 to 8:00 AM

This is an opportunity for coached sessions for rowers who choose to enjoy the camaraderie of team boats (4s, 4x, and 8+s) while improving their fitness and technique.  Prior sculling and/or sweep experience is required along with the flexibility to row with different team mates in the faster yet more stable platform of big boats compared to small boats (1xs, 2xs, 2-s). Maximum number of participants - 20
